What to Expect in a Session With Me
During a session with me, you can expect a direct and honest approach, but one that is always grounded in empathy. I truly believe that everyone can benefit from therapy but also that we are often our own solution. Sometimes it can be hard for us to see that, so I offer a space to build a trusting partnership where I can guide and support you on that journey. I have been privileged to have done a lot of community work prior to private practice where I saw a very diverse group of clients, many of whom were in crisis. Through that work, I developed a widespread, comprehensive knowledge of community resources in the Richmond area. I have extensive knowledge of the disability community and the unique issues that people with disabilities face. I also worked as an interpreter for many years and conduct sessions in American Sign Language for clients who are Deaf/HOH. I have specialization in treatment of substance use disorders, particularly opiate use disorder and am always happy to take on clients in recovery. I utilize a variety of evidence based approaches in my session, tailored to each client’s individual needs, which may include solution-focused therapy for attainting short term measurable goals, motivational interviewing, CBT and DBT for distress tolerance and learning about how our thoughts, feelings and behaviors are connected. If appropriate, I also like to utilize mindfulness techniques. My goal is to create a safe, stable and supportive space for all of my clients, no matter where they are on their journey to become the best version of themself.
A Little About Me
I am originally from Northern VA but am now proud to say that I have lived more than half of my life in Richmond and consider it my home. I love the city feel, the culture, the small businesses, the river and all the weird and wonderful people. I also love being close enough to the country to escape all that and ride my horse as often as I can. That is my biggest form of self care! I aim to encourage and empower my clients to find their unique self care routine as well. I also love to spend time with my beautiful family and our two pitbull mixes as well as extended family who live close by. You may be able to find us out trying new restaurants, exploring a hidden corner of the city or at home watching post apocalyptic show or suspenseful crime dramas.
