John Bitsas

Supervisee of Social Work

What to Expect in a Session With Me

I'm John Bitsas, and my passion lies in fostering an environment where every individual feels not only encouraged but empowered to bring their complete, authentic self into the space. My commitment revolves around nurturing growth-fostering relationships built on empathy, compassion, mutuality, and respect, which honor each person's unique life experiences and identities. I firmly believe that every person possesses the capacity to heal and grow, and I consider a strong therapeutic relationship to be indispensable in this journey. My collaborative approach aims to create a safe and supportive space for my clients to explore their feelings, thoughts, and experiences.

As a member of the Queer community, I understand the utmost importance of creating an affirming space for all individuals. I have extensive experience working with gender-expansive individuals and those exploring their identity while navigating gender-affirming healthcare. My goal is to honor each client's unique experiences and intersectionalities, always recognizing them as the experts in their own lives.

In addition to my work with Queer individuals, I have significant experience in assisting parents who have experienced perinatal loss. I acknowledge that grief is a complex, deeply individual process that cannot be simplified into five discrete stages. Perinatal loss can be devastating and profoundly impact one's mental health and relationships. I accompany my clients through their grief journey and assist them in working towards the integration of their grief.

My therapeutic approach is influenced by person-centered and relational therapies, as well as psychodynamic therapy. I collaborate with clients to establish both long- and short-term goals that are attainable and promote a sense of self-efficacy and self-worth. Witnessing the discovery and growth that arises from internal exploration and curiosity brings me immense joy in my work.

A Little Bit About Me

I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and have also lived in Iowa and Boston. I previously had a career as a private voice instructor and professional singer, which I let inform my practice as a clinician. I still sing throughout Richmond, but mostly enjoy singing to my cats, Jeffery and Violet (it is unknown if they enjoy it, too). In my spare time, I like to bake pastries for friends, spend time outside in the sunshine, and do the daily New York Times crossword puzzle.

I hold a Master of Social Work with a concentration in clinical practice from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Music in Opera Performance from The Boston Conservatory. I am currently a Supervisee in Social Work at RVA Counseling working towards state licensure under the supervision of Michelle Buhrandt, LCSW.
